Author Biographies

Neil Anderson received his B.Sc. and M.Sc. degrees from the University of Manitoba, and his Ph.D. degree from the University of Cal-gary. He is currently Professor of Geophysics at the University of Missouri-Rolla and specializes in engineering and environmental geophysics. Current international projects include ongoing archeological work at Luxor, water resources investigations in southern Africa and potash mine studies in Russia. Much of his recent work in the USA has been focused on applications of geophysical technologies to highway-related problems.

Yuzuru Ashida received a BSc in Earth Science from Kyoto University in Japan in 1967. During 1967–1986 he worked for Japan Petroleum Exploration Co., Ltd. (JAPEX). He received a PhD in Engineering from Tokyo University in 1986. From 1986 until present he has been based at the Department of Civil & Earth Resources Eng., Grad. School of Engineering at Kyoto University. He received Best Paper Award from the Society of Exploration Geophysics of Japan (SEGP) in 1980, 1990, 1998 and from the Society of Material Science of Japan (SMSJ) in 1997.

Michael Asten is a part-time Professorial Fellow at Monash University and founding member of the Centre for Environmental and Geotechnical Applications of Surface Waves (CEGAS). He is also a consulting geophysicist and Partner with Flagstaff Geo-Consultants, Melbourne. He is collaborating with Geoscience Australia, University of Melbourne, the US Geological Survey, Nanyang University Singapore, and the University of Hong Kong in the development of passive seismic methods for geotechnical and site classi-fication tasks. He received the Australian Society of Exploration Geophysicists Laric Hawkins Award 2004, for "the most innovative use of a geophysical technique" for a paper reviewing the status of passive seismic micro-tremor techniques.
